Social anxiety, or social phobia, afflicts many people. About 19.2 million Americans are afflicted with social anxiety. Of the various kinds of mental illnesses, social anxiety is the third most common in the United States. There are various approaches that can be used to beat social anxiety.

But first, you must know what social anxiety really is. Social anxiety is the feeling of excessive fear about social situations. What causes social anxiety is a person’s fear of being watched, criticized, or judged by other people. Because of this unreasonable fear, the person with social anxiety will feel severely distressed during social events or may even avoid these. Furthermore, even days or weeks before the event, the person already suffers with anticipatory anxiety just thinking about it. These people know that it is very unreasonable to feel extremely anxious over such circumstances but they do not know how to overcome it.

Examples of these are talking in public, eating or drinking in front of other people, interacting with people, using public toilets, talking on the phone, and others. A person’s fear of these social events is caused by wrong beliefs, negative opinions of others, and a warped way of thinking. How can a person with social anxiety be diagnosed?

If symptoms of social anxiety are observed, the doctor will initially conduct an evaluation of a person’s medical history and a physical exam. The doctor will have to rule out the existence of a physical disorder by conducting various laboratory tests.

If no physical illness is seen through the laboratory test results, the patient will be referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist. These mental health professionals will be utilizing assessment tools like interviews in order to diagnose social anxiety. Upon diagnosis of social anxiety, the proper treatment strategy for the patient will be prescribed.

Years ago, cognitive-behavior therapy is the best method to beat social anxiety. Cognitive-behavior therapy is about changing a person’s fear into a more reasonable way of thinking. In this treatment, a person with social anxiety learns how to react differently in social events and how to stop avoiding them. The goals of the therapy are achieved through systematic desensitization or exposure to the situations causing anxiety.

In systematic desensitization, the patient is told to imagine the social situations that cause him or her anxiety. With the guidance of the therapist, he or she is guided to work through his or her fears. Real life exposure to instances that cause anxiety is also another way. With the therapist’s guidance, the person is able to overcome his or her anxiety during exposure to the social situations.

Another method to beat social anxiety is through prescription medications. Doctors prescribe drugs like beta-blockers, antidepressants, and tranquilizers. These drugs may be used with cognitive-behavior therapy in order to address the symptoms of social anxiety.

Many people have used prescription drugs and cognitive-behavior therapy. Unfortunately these treatment modalities did not beat social anxiety because only Panic Away is effective in doing so.
